The Scoop - Fall 2026: Regional Food Economy Updates

GPFAP Evaluation: Members of the Greater Pittsburgh Food Action Plan evaluation committee have designed methods for assessing the over 150 strategies in the document, initially published in 2020. The component parts are 1. An update to the State of the Food System 2. Feedback from community partners named in the GPFAP regarding their progress 3. Feedback from City and County staff regarding local government progress, and 4. New priority strategies for the the PFPC as a backbone organization.Currently, all four components are in progress, as well as efforts to connect with municipal governments.

City/County Wheel: The City + County Food Systems map is finally here! We are so excited to share this resource with you. If you have any thoughts, questions, or additional information, don’t hesitate to reach out (sarah@pittsburghfoodpolicy.org). The graphic captures much of the food system-related work that our local government is engaged in - including direct food purchasing, fund and program administration, regulatory roles, and planning efforts, among others. Thank you to partners across our City and County government, and within the PFPC, for their insights, contributions and guidance.

The departments and agencies identified in this graphic have served as the foundation for outreach for initial ‘roundtable’ discussions about the County’s first food purchasing assessment and greater cross-department coordination.

Growing Justice: The PFPC was awarded a highly competitive Growing Justice grant to focus on scaling up Good Food Purchasing Policy efforts across the County. The proposal includes funds for future food purchasing assessments at Pittsburgh Public Schools and Allegheny County (more details below!), as well as capacity to engage and convene staff from multiple County departments and agencies. These ‘roundtables’ would provide space for updates on Good Food purchasing assessments, as well as conversations about changes to contract language, overarching purchasing goals (for example, specific products or initiatives), and a potential County-wide policy.
