This group works to make composting a core part of a just, sustainable food system, from backyard bins to regional drop-off hubs. We advocate for compost-friendly policies, infrastructure, and public education across Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. 

Current focus: advancing city policies that support community composting, expanding food and yard waste diversion, improving public composting infrastructure and drop-off access, strengthening education and partnerships, and developing state and local policy recommendations to reduce barriers to composting.

This group works to make long-term land access for growers easier, fairer, and more permanent in Pittsburgh, treating farming as one of the best uses for vacant public land.

Current focus: improving equitable access to land for food production by advancing policies and practices related to public land disposition, long-term land tenure, zoning, and land preservation throughout the county.

Schools, hospitals, and public agencies spend millions on food every year. The Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) helps them direct that spending toward food that's nutritious, sustainable, locally grown, and fairly produced.

PFPC is partnering with Pittsburgh Public Schools, Allegheny County, and coalition partners like Humane Action Pittsburgh and PASA to implement GFPP locally, and PPS already met 2 of 5 value categories plus all transparency requirements in its first year.

The 5 values: Nutrition, Environmental Sustainability, Regional Economies, Valued Workforce, Animal Welfare.

The Allegheny County Food Justice Committee researches, educates, and advocates for policies and funding that support access to healthy, culturally appropriate food and a more equitable food and agriculture system.

Current focus: advocating for greater food system coordination across agencies and partners at the County level, including the creation of an Office of Food Initiatives.
