Universal School Meals for PA Students!

Universal School Meals for PA Students!

We think all students in the Commonwealth deserve free school meals. Some schools already qualify for free meals through the Community Eligibility Provision (for example, Pittsburgh Public School District) - at these districts, all meals qualify for reimbursement through the USDA. Universal School Meals would use state funds to make sure all students, at all districts have the opportunity to access free school breakfast and lunch. Learn more about the School Nutrition Association of PA campaign, and sign up to add your thoughts or join the coalition at the Legislative School Lunch and a press conference in Harrisburg on May 8th.

Progress made to expand support of universal lunch:

  • SB 180- Universal Meals Bills & HB 180 Universal Meals Bills  - introduced by House and Senate

  • It has been listed as a priority with the Pennsylvania Hunger Action Coalition

  • It was included as a recommendation with the Pennsylvania Food Policy Council

  • It was included as an action step with the PA Department of Health’s State Health Improvement Plan

  • It was recognized as important by the Governor’s office
